Construction of International Student Plaza

Ochanomizu University has decided to build a four-story structure, tentatively named the International Student Plaza, next to the main (east) entrance. The new plaza building will serve as a gathering place with three purposes: international interaction, contribution to the local community, and interaction among generations. Construction will commence in 2018, with the facility scheduled to open in March 2019.

The Plaza’s 2,370 square meters of floor space will include a university information center, international interaction area and a café on the first floor. The second floor will have multipurpose halls, while seminar rooms and lodging facilities will be on the third and fourth floor respectively.

There will also be an alumni commons with conference rooms and offices for the purpose of interaction with university and affiliated school graduates. The Plaza will incorporate stained glass, ceramic panels and other public art, making it a symbol of our university open to everyone. Kengo Kuma and Associates have been commissioned to do the design.

Funding for the construction came from the considerable donations we received from Gurunavi, Inc. CEO Hisao Taki, Ochanomizu University alumni associations including Ouin, Sakura, Kyouei, Meikyo, and Chigusa, and individual alumni. Please note that we are still accepting donations for this facility through the Mirai Kaitaku Kikin (Future Development Fund).
