New Humboldt admissions office entrance exam seminars

02.10.2017 Update

The second seminars since we fully adopted the new Humboldt entrance examination took place on September 23 and 24, 2017. A total of 524 people participated during the two days, including 192 students who were preparing to take the exam.

One of the distinctive features of these seminars was that the participants were not limited just to those taking the admissions office (AO) entrance exam. Participation was also open to second and third-year senior high school students who do not take the exam, providing them an opportunity to get a sense of Ochanomizu University’s atmosphere and the university’s distinctive intellectual background.

The rain that was falling the morning of the first day of the seminars let up at starting time. The respective faculty members responsible for the sessions in five liberal arts and eight science fields prepared meticulously and conducted enthusiastic programs for the high school students. The first day’s seminars had 382 participants.

The weather was also fine on the second day, and practical sessions about searching for information in the library were conducted in the morning and afternoon for second- and third-year senior high school students, who were not preparing for the entrance exam. Graduate students in the science faculty’s biology department exhibited posters with information about their research and discussed their independent research topics. A total of 142 people participated, including eight senior high school teachers.

In the eyes of test takers, conventional entrance examinations in which universities unilaterally choose who should be admitted were strongly amount to a rigid pass or fail. In contrast, the new AO exam format—and noting this at the risk of being misunderstood—benefits senior high school students whether they passed or failed, including getting a glimpse of what it would be like to study in university. On top of that, our intention is to make the entrance examination something that will strongly motivate them to study at Ochanomizu University. We hope that aspiring senior high school students will take on the challenge of this unique entrance examination in coming years as well.
