Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg Speaks

19.02.2018 Update

Ochanomizu University invited Erna Solberg, the prime minister of Norway, to give a special presentation on February 14. This talk came about largely because the Kingdom of Norway’s embassy was so pleased about the partnership agreement Ochanomizu University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) concluded in September 2017. Educational exchanges between the two universities began at an international symposium titled “Gender Equality in the Happiest Country,” which Ochanomizu University’s Institute for Gender Studies hosted last April, inviting NTNU faculty members to attend. Joint research in gender studies between the two universities is ongoing.
While relating her personal experiences, Prime Minister Solberg spoke in clear terms about the current situation of women in Norway and efforts related to such things as political participation and employment. Afterward, the prime minister answered questions from a group of 87 attendees that included Ochanomizu University undergraduates, graduate students, international students, research students, postdoctoral candidates and senior high school students from our affiliated school. The questions covered topics such as what is needed to increase the number of Japanese women participating in politics and to encourage men to actively help in bringing up children, how to increase female university students’ interest in political science, and many other questions that Ochanomizu students naturally have, since our mission is to train female leaders. While the questions from the audience seemed nearly endless in number, the prime minister answered each query courteously and with humor. The prime minister’s presentation and the Q&A session were both considered great successes.
