Applying for a Scholarship

1. Apply through the university
2. Free application by an individual

1.Scholarship applications accepted through the university

  • MEXT Scholarship (government scholarship; domestic selection)
There are two patterns when an international student comes to Japan: as a “ Japanese Government Scholarship student” who comes to Japan with a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), or as a “privately funded student” who comes to Japan at their own expense.
When a privately funded graduate student has particularly good grades, the student may become a Japanese Government Scholarship student receiving a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology after receiving a recommendation from the university. This is called “domestic selection”. Domestic selection takes place once a year in around September based on noticed from MEXT. Ochanomizu University recommends candidates selected within the university based on the first scholarship application registration each year.
  • Private scholarships
Ochanomizu University receives about 30 notices for private scholarships each year (the actual number varies by year). The timing of the notice varies by organization. As soon as a notice arrives, the university makes recommendations according to the following procedure.
Applying for a scholarship

To receive a Japanese Government Scholarship (domestic selection) or private scholarship through the university, register as a candidate to be considered for recommendation.
Registration is accepted twice a year, in mid-October and in mid-April. Information regarding registration is provided on bulletin boards and by e-mail.
Registration is accepted in either of the following ways.

  1. The applicant directly submits a paper copy of the Scholarship Registration Form for Privately-Funded International Students
  2. The applicant submits completes the above registration form and submits it by e-mail
  3. Submit to: International Students Section, International Affairs Office

* Note that submissions made outside the application period or by post will not be accepted.
After submissions are received, the university prepares a table ranking the candidates and makes recommendations for scholarship starting at the top. The table of candidates is valid for six months. That is, applicants are required to re-register every semester.
The criteria for recommendation are as follows.

1-Recommendation criteria

  1. Student status
  2. Academic evaluation
  3. Status of exemption from tuition fees
  4. Status of scholarships received
  5. Status of housing allocation

Nominators determine the ranking taking these five criteria into consideration.

2-Selection method
For private scholarships and JASSO scholarships, nominators select top candidates from applicants who meet the conditions of each organization.

3-Number of recommendations

As a rule, a candidate is recommended for one private scholarship only and not for multiple scholarships.
If a candidate is rejected for the first recommendation, she can be recommended one more time (maximum of 2 recommendations).

Scholarships freely applied to by individual application

Ochanomizu University receives about five notices for private scholarships by individual application each year (the actual number varies by year). Any student is welcome to make an individual application on her own, provided she meets the conditions of the organization. As soon as a notice arrives, the information is provided on bulletin boards and by e-mail to students who have registered as candidates.

Ochanomizu University offers its own scholarships specifically for international students. (These are lump-sum payments awarded to outstanding students at the time of their graduation. Note that they differ from monthly scholarships for current students.)
