Summer Program in English 2013

In promotion of exchanges with overseas students and career development of the students, the Summer Program in English has been offered in Ochanomizu University every summer since 2011. As part of our university’s globalization strategies, we aim to promote mutual exchanges of students and development of global human resources who internationally play an active role. In August 2013, the Summer Program was offered as an intensive course accepting students from our university (including international students), students from our domestic partner universities (allowing credit transfer), and at the same time international students from our overseas partner universities , as well as being open to the public to join as free students. Under the three themes, lectures are all conducted in English.

Reporting Summer Program in English 2013

Program Period: August 1st to 9th, 2013 (9 days)

"Summer Program in English 2013" in Ochanomizu University was held from August 1st to 9th 2013 (for nine days). Implementation of the program had come to its third year, and it was a year of a big leap as there were 98 applications (12 schools from 10 countries) from overseas partner institutions, and this number was nearly 10 times as large as last year’s. Through the selection process and some cancellations, students from overseas partner universities became 55 people, but more than 100 people in conjunction with the 53 students (from Ochanomizu University, and from domestic partner universities) made the program one that consisted of a large group of participants from 18 countries in total.
Divided into three classes under each theme (social science; natural science; literature, architectural engineering, and art studies), discussions and lectures were conducted in English. As students in each class were multicultural, very diverse opinions were exchanged and with that the classes were fulfilling.
Extracurricular activities included field works that were related to the content of each theme. In addition, participants from overseas partner universities chose to participate in and enjoyed a summer night in Japan in yukata by participating in the ‘Twilight Summer Tour’ (sponsored by Sumida ward Tourism Association), enjoyed sightseeing nearby in Tokyo, and/or enjoyed experiencing the tea ceremony. Each seemed to enjoy Japanese cultural experience their own way. Many voices were heard that said "I want to come back to Japan again," "I want next to study in Japan in a long-term." We look forward to the further development of students triggered by the present program.
