Ochanomizu University and Waseda University Conclude Coordination and Cooperation Agreement

01.02.2017 Update

The President of Ochanomizu University Kimiko Murofushi and The President of Waseda University Kaoru Kamata signed a coordination and cooperation agreement between their universities this past January 31. The agreement intended to promote research, education, academia-industry collaborations and contributions to the community at both universities as well as enhance their mutual development.

At the press conference following the signing ceremony, President Murofushi expressed her aspirations: “Starting with the credit transfer system at undergraduate and graduate schools, as well as the cooperation in research and thesis instruction, this is a step toward promoting the development of new educational and research organizations for a new era. We hope to extend our mutual interaction throughout our schools.”

Noting his own hopes, President Kamata said: “We will be initiating these efforts in scientific fields. I’m pleased that cooperation with Ochanomizu University, one of Japan’s foremost women’s universities, will improve our educational and research environment, making it particularly suitable for training human resources, such as researchers who will play important roles in an era of gender equality.”

Based on this comprehensive agreement, the two universities expect additional development and improvement of their research and education as they continuously expand the content of their collaboration. The expectations for this agreement between the two universities are described below.

Hopes for coordination and cooperation

The two universities are close to each other—just one kilometer and a half apart—which provides a favorable environment for interaction among their researchers and students. Our hope is that this comprehensive agreement will help students and faculty at the two universities inspire each other and make advances together in education and research.

Ochanomizu University’s mission is to educate students to be global leaders. It has built a solid position as one of the few national women’s universities in Japan, characterized by advanced, specialized education in small group programs. Launching two new research centers in April 2016—the Institute for Human Life Innovation and the Institute for Education and Human Development—the university has carried out interdisciplinary research on human development, educational science, and improvement of the health and the quality of life of children and the elderly.

Waseda University has drafted Waseda Vision 150, a plan ensuring that it continues to contribute to the world as one of the leading universities in Asia. As a prominent private Japanese university, Waseda is enhancing its educational and research environment and policies to strengthen students’ ability through hands-on activities. The university aims to rapidly improve the quality of its education and research by taking advantage of the global talent flows. This will include pursuing closer cooperation among industry, the public sector and academia in Japan and elsewhere, offering educational opportunities that meet international standards, and producing even more global leaders.

There are high hopes for expanding cooperation in scientific fields through joint education and research between Ochanomizu University’s Faculty of Science and Waseda University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. Starting with the field of bioinformatics, they intend to make substantial contributions in sectors related to the environment, medical care and health, and next-generation energy by devoting human and material resources to cooperative efforts such as credit exchanges, research guidance and joint research.
