Ochanomizu University Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences and Nara Women’s University Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences Established the Division of Cooperative Major in Human Centered Engineering in April 2016.

The shortage of female science and engineering personnel is extreme, and training female human resources to ensure that they have advanced, specialized science and engineering expertise is an urgent issue. In particular, the training and activities of female researchers and technicians with viewpoints from daily life within science and engineering fields will serve as a wellspring for Japanese industry. The Cooperative Major in Human Centered Engineering is designed to instill the skills needed to conduct research with flexible perceptions of various issues related to human lifestyles, based on a broad understanding of everything from the basics of various engineering fields to practical applications.

Promoting engineering from the consumer perspective and practicing manufacturing with a focus on people and their ways of living, we carry out interdisciplinary human centered engineering education and research. Rather than accommodating our lifestyles to science and technology, we need to create science and technology suited to our lifestyles. This joint major trains students to devise solutions to various lifestyle-related issues according to engineering-based methodologies and from the consumer’s point of view to create a safe, secure and affluent future for our society and lifestyle.
