Women and some men have striven over two centuries to give women education equal to that given to men. Women have not only accessed and embraced higher education, but they have been very successful and in their chosen fields they perform very well. They enter many different professions and careers, and they balance home and work – so one might ask what problems remain?

By examining several different professions and careers that women enter, the lecture will explore the barriers, often consistent and continuing, and difficulties that women encounter to achieve success in a world that still is not equal, despite decades of Equality and Diversity initiatives, offices, boards and committees.

The choices, fully embraced or otherwise, that women make will be considered, along with the role played for women today by confidence or lack of it, resilience or the opposite, the burden of perfection, and fear of risk-taking and failure. How early in life do these factors come into play, at school or later? Personal experience and the experience of colleagues and friends will feature in the lecture.

We should all ask ourselves the question: Who are we dancing for?
