1. Application Method

Put all required application documents in the designated university envelope and submit them by registered express mail to the address indicated below within the indicated application period. Applications will only be accepted by registered express mail.

Application documents must arrive at the university by the final day of the application period.
Incomplete application packages will not be accepted. Please ensure that all necessary documents are included. Once the application package is submitted, under no circumstances will Ochanomizu University accept changes, return documents or refund the application screening fee.

2. Eligibility

The applicant must be a female who a) does not hold Japanese citizenship, b) either possesses, or is able to obtain a Status of Residence of College Student” according to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, and c) falls under any one of the following categories.

  1. (1) A university graduate by March 2017 (i.e., person who has received a bachelor’s degree or will receive such a degree by March 2017. See Note 1.
  2. (2) A person who has received (or will receive by March 2017) a bachelor’s degree in accordance with Paragraph 4, Article 104 of the School Education Act.
  3. (3) A person who has completed (or will complete by March 2017) 16 years of formal education in a foreign country.
  4. (4) A person who has received (or will receive by March 2017) a degree while in Japan through a distance education program at an overseas school that would be considered as having completed 16 years of formal education in that country.
  5. (5) A person who has received (or will receive by March 2017) a bachelor’s degree from a foreign university based in Japan (limited to degrees that would be considered as having completed 16 years of formal education in that country) that is also recognized by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as an educational institution.
  6. (6) A person who has completed (or will complete by March 2017) the specialized curriculum of an advanced vocational school (limited to schools with programs of four years or more that has also met other standards set by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) as such.
  7. (7) A person designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Ministry of Education Notification No. 5 of 1928)
  8. (8) A person recognized through screening at the applicable graduate school at Ochanomizu University as having academic abilities equivalent to or above a university graduate and who will be at least 22 years of age on March 31, 2017.
  • Note 1: Category (1) refers to Japanese universities as defined in the School Education Act. Eligibility under Category (3) is determined on the basis of whether an applicant has completed 16 years of formal education in a foreign country or not.
  • Note 2: Individuals who have graduated from a Japanese high school must apply according to the admission procedures for Japanese applicants.
  1. Persons wishing to take the entrance exam under category (2) through (8) above should inquire in advance to the Admissions Office before applying.
    Applicants wishing to take the entrance exam under category (8) must undergo a pre-application qualification screening.
    Applicants under category (8) who have graduated from a junior college (three-year system or less), technical college, vocational school, etc. or a Japan branch school of a foreign university that does not fall under (5) or (6), will be considered as not having graduated from university (i.e., not conferred a bachelor’s degree).

Two copies of the same 5 x 4cm photo taken within three months of the application submission (affix to the designated location on the application form).

Official letter from the dean or rector of the final institution. (Copies are not acceptable and original diplomas will not be accepted. If only the diploma is available, provide certification from a notary public or other authority.)

Original transcript issued by the dean or rector of the home university (copies are not acceptable).

Level 1 or N1 certificate (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Certificate of Result and Scores) from Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) or the Japan Foundation (IAJ in Taiwan). Please provide the original certificate. Copies are not accepted.

9 Copy of the Resident Register

Issued by the applicant’s resident municipality in Japan. If you do not have a resident register at the time of application, provide a copy of the passport details page (name, date of birth, gender) and the page showing the Status of Residence or Japanese visa.

10 Examination fee
(transfer payment slip)

30,000 yen+
(Payable by bank transfer at a financial institution other than JP Bank; the transfer fee is the responsibility of the applicant) The name of the examinee must be indicated as the Name of Remitter. After paying the fee, the stamped part of the slip (納入済票) (proof of paying out) should be affixed to the prescribed location the back of the application form.

*In principle, the fee is not required for international students on Japanese government scholarships provided that the applicant has applied to extend the period of scholarship payments by applying to attend Ochanomizu University. In such cases, the applicant should also provide the Mombukagakusho Scholarship Student Certificate

11 Return envelope for the entrance examination ticket

Please fill in your address on the designated envelope and affix 372 yen in stamps (92 yen for standard mail + 280 yen for express delivery).

12 Mailing label

Required for mailing letter of acceptance. Use an address where you can readily be reached.
